Easy access, good visibility, ergonomically adjustable seats and the greatest possible comfort – these are all requirements that senior citizens have of a car. Most are also inclined towards new technologies in the cockpit: blind spot assistants help with neck problems by looking over the shoulder and many older drivers also like parking aids. Verivox Versicherungsvergleich GmbH has analyzed which models are most popular with older drivers. For this purpose, the stated driver age was evaluated anonymously for all 2020 (at Verivox) new car insurance policies.
Mercedes B class
The Mercedes B-Class is in first place in the Verivox ranking: customers with this model were 59.1 years old on average. Of all customers with a Mercedes B-Class, the proportion of over 65-year-olds was 41 percent. However, the B-Class is comparatively unpopular with customers under the age of 30: they make up only 1.9 percent of those insured with this model.
Skoda yeti
The car with the second highest average driver age is the Skoda Yeti. Anyone who sees such a model on the road can assume that the driver is 58.9 years old on average. The proportion of customers with this model over the age of 65 is 38.5 percent.
Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV 4 is also popular with older people. The average driver of this SUV is 57.1 years old, with the proportion of over 65-year-olds in the Verivox customer group being significantly lower than with the Skoda Yeti and the Mercedes B- Great: 28.9 percent of Verivox customers with a Toyota RAV 4 are seniors.
Audi Q3
The Audi Q3 is fourth in the ranking. The average age of the drivers of this model is 55.8 years, with 31.4 percent almost a third of the customer group with Audi Q3 seniors. The ADAC is also convinced of this model for seniors: In a ranking of the most suitable cars for over 65-year-olds, the car takes first place in the price range of 35,000 to 40,000 euros. According to the ADAC, the extensive assistance systems, the practical entry and exit and the large interior are particularly convincing.
dacia Grim
The fifth place in the ranking is taken by the Dacia Duster. The drivers are on average 54.8 years old, with just under a quarter (22.3 percent) of all Verivox customers with Dacia Dusters being seniors. The Opel Meriva is not among the top 5 in the ranking: The average age here is 54.6 years, but the proportion of seniors in this customer group is at least 31.0 percent.
Overall, it can be observed that SUVs are particularly popular with seniors: “Among the 10 car models with the oldest drivers, SUVs dominate, which are traditionally preferred by older drivers because they are easy to get in,” says Wolfgang Schütz, Managing Director of Verivox Versicherungsvergleich GmbH, at the company website. In contrast, small and compact cars dominate the top 10 among younger drivers under 30.
