From September 17th to October 3rd it’s finally that time again: The Theresienwiese in our beautiful hometown of Munich comes to life and it’s O’zapft is – we’re really looking forward to it! The best thing about it: This year we have very special companions for the Wiesn – an exclusive limited edition, the Käfer sneaker.
A real Munich Wiesn cooperation
For these extraordinary Käfer sneakers, we have teamed up with two traditional Munich companies: Feinkost Käfer contributes the iconic scattered pattern with the ladybugs. The Tretter family has stood for shoe expertise for 75 years and here you can also get the Käfer sneaker directly in the local Thomas branches – of course in addition to our online shop. And the sneaker comes from us, our MOD.3 vegan – as you know it, handmade in Portugal, climate-neutral and vegan.
In the following interview between Carl and Michael Käfer you can read how the cooperation came about and what connects us three companies.
Now tell me: How did the idea of a Käfer sneaker come about?
Carl from MONACO DUCKS: We have been closely associated with Feinkost Käfer for a long time. For example, we equipped the staff of the new vegan/vegetarian Green Beetle restaurant with our vegan sneaker. I studied together with Gregor Tretter and there are also close ties between the Tretter and Käfer families. So the project came naturally. Three Munich family-run companies that value locality, sustainability and quality are uniting for a campaign for the largest event in our city.
What would you say then, connects Käfer and MONACO DUCKS, Michael?
Michael Kaefer: The passion to keep evolving and breaking new ground, the love for the product, the focus on the highest quality, the pursuit of sustainability and, last but not least, both of our roots in Munich.
And what do you appreciate about Feinkost Käfer, Carl?
Carl from MONACO DUCKS: Käfer shares our values and relies on local, high-quality products from fair and sustainable cultivation and production. It also stands for tradition, enjoyment and quality of life like hardly any other brand.
Speaking of sustainable cultivation – what does sustainability mean for Käfer, Michael?
Michael Kaefer: Sustainability is an important part of our success. We have always sold and processed no mass products, but food made with love, passion and quality awareness from small producers. Fruit and vegetables that have matured on carefully cultivated fields, meat from animals raised in a species-appropriate manner, a great deal from the region and selected products from all over the world that meet our quality and sustainability criteria. In addition, we are making all parts of the company future-proof with a major sustainability initiative, including in terms of energy consumption, resource conservation, avoidance of food waste and social commitment.
Back to the sneaker: sneakers at the Wiesn is that okay, Michael?
Michael Kaefer: The sneaker has been socially acceptable for the deer leather for several years. It is simply a practical, comfortable piece of footwear and especially the younger ones sometimes don’t really get used to brogues – especially since they are in the closet most of the year. So it’s all the nicer that die-hard fans of the Käfer Wiesn-Schänke can now wear sustainable sneakers to match our famous coffee mug.
And where can you be found at the Wiesn, Carl?
Carl from MONACO DUCKS: I prefer to sit in the beer garden on Sunday afternoons. If it has to be more hearty, then of course in the Käfer tent. During the Oktoberfest, I’m in town almost every day and enjoy the international audience and the unique atmosphere away from the Oktoberfest.
