The obelisk from the City Center was moved to this location

Zoetermeer residents who have lived in our city for a long time are probably familiar with this work of art. The obelisk stood for years on the Burgemeester Wegstapplein in the Stadshart. Together with a pyramid artwork, which stood on the same square, it moved to another location in Zoetermeer in 2016. Do you know where it is now?

The obelisk and the pyramid are works by visual artist Jan Samson (1954 – ). According to the artist, they refer to a fictional past, as can be read on his website.

Opposite Intertoys

The obelisk and the pyramid are made of copper, granito and bronze, we read on the Kunstwacht website. Jan Samson placed them in 1987 on the square opposite the police station. The obelisk stood between the Intertoys toy store, the entrance to the Konmar and the bicycle shed on the Burgemeester Wegstapplein. The height of the artwork made it a landmark for shoppers. The square was overhauled in 2016 and the artist had to look for a new location.

At the center

A high crane lifted the obelisk in 2016 to be moved by truck to the Burgemeester Hoekstra Park. The pyramid also disappeared from the square and traveled to the park in Rokkeveen. The two works of art are opposite each other on a lawn. From the top of the Rozenberg you have a wide view of the water tower, the obelisk and the pyramid, which together form a kind of triangle.
