The number of refugees who entered Berlin illegally and were apprehended by the federal police has risen sharply this year.

The respective monthly figures were about twice as high as in the previous year, according to a statement from the Berlin directorate.

By July of this year, 7,179 people had entered the country illegally, which is only slightly below the number for the whole of last year (7,419). Especially since April, the monthly numbers have been over 1000, such values were not reached in any month in 2022.

A similar trend was already evident throughout Germany in autumn 2022 and again since April of this year. By July, around 56,000 people had entered the country illegally and were then apprehended. Last year the number was almost 92,000.

The federal police are primarily responsible for security and controls at certain borders, in airports, train stations and trains.
