The number of corporate bankruptcies rose by around a fifth in the first half of the year

According to current figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of company insolvencies in Germany rose significantly in the first half of the year.

In the period from January to June, 8,571 filed corporate insolvencies were reported, the Wiesbaden authority announced on Wednesday. The number was 20.5 percent higher than the previous year’s level. In percentage terms, companies from the transport and warehousing segment were most often affected.

According to the statistics authority, the total amount of claims from creditors has also increased significantly: it grew from around 8.2 billion euros in the first half of 2022 to around 13.9 billion euros.

While the number of corporate bankruptcies increased significantly, the number of consumer bankruptcies fell slightly. In the months January to June, the authority registered 33,140 cases, a decrease of 1.9 percent compared to the same period last year.
