WIESBADEN (Dow Jones)–In 2021, the construction of 380,914 apartments was approved in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that was 3.3 percent or 12,325 more building permits than in the previous year. The figures include both building permits for dwellings in new buildings and new dwellings in existing buildings. In a longer-term comparison, the number of apartments approved remained at a high level: the last time there had been more approvals was in 1998 with 437,084.
Around 328,636 apartments were approved for new residential buildings in 2021, 2.6 percent or 8,274 more apartments than in the previous year. This is particularly due to the development of two-family houses with an increase of 25.1 percent to around 32,000 new apartments. This strong increase is likely to be partly due to the expiry of the Baukindergeld in the first quarter of 2021 and the end of funding for houses with energy efficiency level 55, the statisticians said.
