The north-south tunnel of the Berlin S-Bahn will be closed for six weeks from January 6th for modernization work.

Lines S1, S2, S25 and S26 are affected, as Deutsche Bahn announced on Thursday as the operator of the S-Bahn. Buses will be used as a replacement.

The six-week construction period is divided into two sections. Initially, the section between Südkreuz/Yorckstraße (Großgörschenstraße) and Nordbahnhof will be closed from January 6 (from 10 p.m.) to January 27 (10 p.m.). During the second phase of construction from January 27 (from 10 p.m.) to February 17 (10 p.m.), the closure will be extended to Gesundbrunnen.

Passengers are recommended to use the Ringbahn for the extensive bypass between Südkreuz/Schoeneberg and Gesundbrunnen. In addition to the replacement bus service, lines S45 (to Hennigsdorf) and S46 (to Waidmannslust, from 27 January to Frohnau) will be extended throughout the construction period.

“Sometimes there are changed departure times, clock and platform changes during the entire construction period,” said the railway.

The modernization work in the north-south tunnel takes place every year in January, but this time it is a little more extensive. According to DB, 9,100 meters of track and 700 sleepers are to be renewed.
