The NHL ordered the Ottawa Senators to forfeit their first-round draft pick as punishment for their former player’s breach of contract Yevgeny Dadonov with.

Senators GM Pierre Dorion paid for the mistake at his workplace. The team’s owners announced on Wednesday that they had fired Dorion, who had been in charge since 2016.

Dadonov, who played for the Senators in 2020–21, was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in the summer of 2021. Vegas later tried to trade the Russian player to the Anaheim Ducks, but the move fell through when it became clear that Dadonov has a clause preventing the transfer to that club.

Clubs must inform about such contract terms in connection with player trades. For some reason, the Senators didn’t do that when they traded Dadonov to Vegas.

The NHL punished Ottawa by removing the team’s first-round reserve. The Canadian club can decide for itself whether it will serve its punishment in the booking event of 2024, 2025 or 2026.

In the Senators camp, the moka was taken hard. Shortly after the NHL’s punishment, the club’s ownership hierarchy held a press conference where it was said that Dorion had been fired from the club.

After a difficult last few years, Ottawa has started this season with a bang. There are four wins out of eight matches. The team is burdened by the long injuries of numerous top players.

In the Ottawa goal, pucks are blocked Joonas Korpisalo.
