Turkmen President-elect Serdar Berdimuhamedov was inaugurated in Ashgabat, the state news agency reported. TDH. The new head of state is the son of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who has led Turkmenistan for the past 15 years.
“The ceremony dedicated to the inauguration of the President of Turkmenistan took place today at the Rukhyet Palace in the capital,” the agency said.
On February 11, Berdymukhammedov Sr., who has served as president of Turkmenistan since 2007, said he had decided to cede government to the younger generation but remain chairman of the upper house of parliament, the halk maslahaty.
Three days later, the election campaign began, one of the participants of which was the son of Berdimuhamedov, Serdar. If elected, Berdymukhamedov Jr. promised to maintain the country’s neutrality, develop good neighborly relations and strengthen cooperation with international organizations, in particular the UN.
The elections were held on March 12 and, according to the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov won 72.97% of the vote. He was congratulated on his election victory by the leaders of several countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
