The Netherlands has signed the Faro Treaty. With this treaty, the Council of Europe emphasizes a different perspective on heritage. The Treaty of Faro focuses on people and society and their relationship with heritage. 6 million euros are available for implementation in the Netherlands.

The three most important goals in the treaty are to encourage participation and decision-making in heritage practice, to use heritage for social goals and to be open to other heritage views.

Faro Treaty Implementation Programme

The National Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) is running the Faro implementation program to translate the principles of the treaty into practice together with the heritage field. The RCE works together with the heritage sector to see how heritage care can work more in line with Faro’s ideas. Consider more attention to participation in the education of new heritage care providers, more room for citizen initiatives or stronger connections between heritage and care or quality of life. 6 million euros are available for this purpose for the period 2023-2025.

Now that the treaty has been signed, the ratification process begins. If parliament approves the treaty, it will enter into force. The treaty applies in any case to the European Netherlands and the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius).
