The Netherlands will soon conclude a security agreement with Ukraine for the next ten years. This agreement is a signal from the government that the Netherlands wants to support Ukraine for a longer period of time in the areas of security, defense, reconstruction and justice. The Netherlands is thus helping Ukraine to defend itself against Russia.

Minister Bruins Slot: “Our own security is closely linked to the security of Ukraine. We must not forget for a single day that the brave struggle that Ukrainians wage day in and day out in their country also concerns us. Ukraine must be assured that they can count on our support in the longer term. That is also a strong signal to Russia: the West is steadfast. Without Western support, the Ukraine we know today will cease to exist, the Russian threat will become even closer, and stability and security on our continent will come under serious pressure.”

During the NATO summit in Vilnius on July 12, 2023, the Netherlands announced that, like the G7, it would make agreements on security with Ukraine, so-called security arrangements. Since then, the Netherlands has been in discussions with Ukraine to give substance to this. The security agreement includes agreements on medium- and long-term military support, cooperation to strengthen the defense industry, increasing Ukraine’s (cyber) resilience and strengthening the interoperability of the Ukrainian army with NATO.

In addition, the Netherlands and Ukraine have agreed to continue working together on recovery and reconstruction, to counter hybrid threats, to remain committed to truth-finding and justice for all victims of the war, and to continue to use sanctions to put further pressure on Russia to make.

The security agreement will be signed soon.
