Prime Minister Rutte signed a letter of intent with Oman on behalf of the cabinet at the climate summit in Egypt (COP27) on cooperation in the field of hydrogen.
This collaboration will contribute to the energy transition in Oman and to setting up import and export facilities for green hydrogen. As a result, in line with the recently presented International Climate Strategy, the Netherlands is working on accelerating the energy transition beyond its national borders, while at the same time creating opportunities to use part of this green hydrogen in the future to make the Dutch industry and transport sector more sustainable. The government sees the development of a hydrogen market as an indispensable part of the energy transition.
Responsible Minister Rob Jetten for Climate and Energy: “Import and export chains are essential for a properly functioning hydrogen market. Developing the hydrogen chain and increasing the share of clean hydrogen in the energy mix is a priority for both the Netherlands and Oman. I am very happy with this step. In the long run, the Netherlands can start importing green hydrogen from Oman to meet the increasing demand here.”
In addition to setting up import and export facilities, the hydrogen collaboration focuses on exchanging knowledge and expertise and promoting research collaboration. The Netherlands is already collaborating with Oman in the field of water, energy and food. The declaration of intent is a concrete starting point for the collaboration between the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the Port of Sohar. The Netherlands can import green hydrogen from Oman via these ports. Due to its location, the port of Sohar is ideally positioned to become a regional hub in the field of green hydrogen.
