The Netherlands is enjoying a tropical day, although some expected more | Inland

“We feared the worst, but finding a parking space this morning went well for us,” says Jose (61) from Zaandam while lying on a beach bed on the beach of Zandvoort. Because of the weather forecast, she and her friend Annette (58) from Almere left early for the coast, but it is quieter and less warm than they had expected. “The perfect weather for a nice chat on the beach and reading a good book,” concludes Jose.

In Zandvoort the mercury will fluctuate around 22 degrees on Saturday and there will be a strong wind. They are the perfect conditions for water sports enthusiasts. “The sea is rougher and more choppy than expected, but the weather is still super nice,” says Benjamin Nicolaas (14) as he runs towards the sea in a wetsuit. He clamps his new surfboard under his arm. “I can’t wait to try it out.”

A spokesperson for WeerOnline explains that the truly tropical temperatures have been measured mainly in Brabant, Limburg and around the Veluwe. “It was really hot there, but it was not that bad along the coast.”

In any case, the half-German Alex de Vos (57) is delighted with the sunny coastal weather. He has set out a camp bed on the boulevard of Zandvoort on which he is sunbathing. “I have put the bed in such a way that I am not bothered by the wind: it is great.” De Vos lives in Germany, but was in the Netherlands for the concert of The Eagles. “We thought: we’ll add a day at the beach and enjoy a nice day of Dutch lifestyle: sun, sea, a herring sandwich and a beer.”

It was quite busy in Scheveningen on Saturday, but that had everything to do with Flag Day. Due to the popularity of this event, where the Hollandse Nieuwe is traditionally announced in the harbour, the municipality of The Hague had created a so-called busy scenario. For example, traffic controllers were deployed and extra enforcers were present on and around the beach.

Although severe weather was predicted at the beginning of the week after the tropical temperatures, it seems to remain dry in most places in our country on Saturday afternoon. “Perhaps a few showers will pass from the northwest of the country, but it will probably remain dry in Brabant and Limburg,” says a spokesperson for WeerOnline. Festival-goers at Pinkpop in Landgraaf will probably be spared a wet day.
