Today, Minister Jetten for Climate and Energy and Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Ribera of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge signed an agreement to collaborate more in the field of renewable hydrogen. This took place during a visit by Minister Jetten to Spain. He will visit Spain together with Dutch companies that want to develop concrete projects together with Spanish companies for the creation of hydrogen corridors.
To get the hydrogen market going within Europe, import and export connections and the associated infrastructure are crucial. Spain will become a major supplier of renewable hydrogen in Europe; this hydrogen can be exported to Northwest Europe via Spanish and Dutch ports. These import and export corridors within Europe can ensure that we become less dependent on imports from non-EU countries.
Rob Jetten (Minister for Climate and Energy): “To tackle both the climate crisis and the energy crisis, we need to accelerate the transition from fossil to renewable energy. European cooperation in the field of hydrogen helps enormously in this respect. With its enormous potential for renewable hydrogen, I see Spain as one of our most important hydrogen partners within the EU.”
There are already declarations of intent between Spanish and Dutch ports for the development of concrete hydrogen corridors. With the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Spain and the Netherlands, the cooperation is further strengthened. To ensure that the Netherlands is not dependent on one country for the import of hydrogen in the future, the Netherlands will sign MoUs with several countries. Countries with plenty of sun, wind and space have great potential for the production of renewable hydrogen.
