To start with, as always, our “making of” from the print product advertised here:
THE SHADOW WORLD AS A HIT CONTAINER
How do you get the music of Kate Bush today? Well, it’s simple: You sit in a graveyard with your pupils twisted backwards while your soul is being enslaved by a super demon – whereupon your best friends put a pair of headphones on you with “Running Up That Hill” to get you out of the break away from the shadow world. Some things never change!
In any case, this scene from the fourth season of the hit series “Stranger Things” ensures that Kate Bush is just being discovered by a whole new generation. Her hit from 1985 is currently back in the charts. Kate Bush left her mark on the Musikexpress right at the start of her career. The first issue with her on the cover was published in 1978, and many more were to follow. And of course we are pleased that there will be another occasion for such a event in 2022. Down with the demons, long live Kate Bush.

The Music Express 09/2022 – the topics at a glance:
Kate Bush – The first of her kind
As a new generation engages with Kate Bush’s work through Stranger Things, they might be asking themselves an old question: Who is the woman who wrote her first songs at eleven and was a pop star by nineteen? Because she makes art on her own terms, she was always considered “eremitic”, “enigmatic”, “eccentric” in the male domain of pop. How Kate Bush established a completely new, self-determined type of female artist – and in the process invented the 1980s.
Danger Mouse & Black Thought: “I like to bring people together”
He had a huge hit with Gnarls Barkley, and his work for artists such as Beck, The Black Keys, Gorillaz, Norah Jones, U2 and Adele made him one of the most sought-after producers of the past 15 years. Now, Danger Mouse has teamed up with rapper Black Thought (The Roots) to produce an album that is both out of date and rooted in the here and now. We talk to Danger Mouse about CHEAT CODES, the triumph of hip hop, instincts and production philosophies.
Maggie Rogers – Sense and Sensibility and Beer on Feet
A lot has happened in the six years since the world first met Maggie Rogers in a viral video with Pharrell Williams: first album, first world tour, all the madness of sudden fame, burnout, a master’s degree from Harvard and, of course, the pandemic. Now the heavy second plate appears. Loud and infectiously poppy, SURRENDER celebrates lust as a form of rebellion.
Rasmus Engler & Jan Müller: “What is the Warm Round Piece?”
With “Vorglühen” the novel debut of the two musicians Rasmus Engler (Herrenmagazin, Gary) and Jan Müller (Tocotronic, part-time podcaster and ME columnist) has just been published. It’s about Hamburg in 1994 … the year Hamburger Schule broke. It’s about the first adventures in the big city, about love and friendship, about betrayal, about alcohol. It’s about being right here, right now. We present an excerpt from the work.
Oliver Sim: “I don’t want a Disney prince!”
Five years after The xx’s last album, singer Oliver Sim is releasing a solo album: HIDEOUS BASTARD. A break with the band? Not at all. Jamie xx produced. And Romy Madley Croft has been Oliver’s best friend since the sandbox, still. There are still good reasons why Oliver Sim had to do something of his own. And one of them has to do with the fact that The xx are privately the queerest band in upscale mainstream pop – but often prefer to keep their lyrics foggy rather than revealing personal details. That’s the end of it for Oliver Sim.
800 – More albums have changed our lives
For our last issue, our big anniversary edition ME800, we asked core authors and stars to write for us about records that have significantly enriched their biographies. The feedback was so overwhelming that we were not able to print all the texts, despite the increased volume of the magazine. And so we present here the sequel, which is in no way inferior to its predecessor. After all, there can never be enough recommendations for optimizing your existence.
ME Hero: Beyoncé – Top of the class
Beyonce. This is probably the biggest pop star of our time. The most powerful image. The strongest voice. The most powerful performance since Destiny’s Child. Since the 90s. However, there are actually people who can’t relate to Beyoncé. How can that be?
