The municipality of Zaanstad pays part of the health insurance for minimum wage

The municipality of Zaanstad helps residents who have difficulty making ends meet. Part of their health insurance will now be paid by the municipality. This applies to residents on social assistance and to residents with a low income.

Councilor René Tuijn says that there are Zaankanters who have difficulty making ends meet every month. Paying for health insurance can be a heavy burden for them.

“As a municipality, we want to alleviate this burden somewhat with collective health insurance. We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to obtain information and make a choice. That is why we focus on good information and, where necessary, assistance with a switch. Together with Gezond We organize information meetings throughout Zaanstad and they also advise Zaankanters by telephone and online,” says the councilor.

Advice

Within the municipality’s collective health insurance, you can choose from six packages from two different health insurers: Univé and Zilveren Kruis. This concerns basic insurance and various additional insurances. Gezond Verzekerd is an independent organization and provides free advice on which insurance best suits residents and is the most affordable.

It is not the first time that the municipality of Zaanstad has come up with collective health insurance. This year, the municipality has entered into a partnership with Gezond Verzekerd for the first time. “Residents find it difficult to choose insurance and possibly make a switch,” says spokesperson Bibi Bleekemolen. “Gezond Verzekerd therefore organizes meetings in the city to help people make a choice.”

Conditions

The city is aware of the number of Zaankanters on benefits, but because the city also offers help to people with a low income, it is not clear how many people will actually use it.

Residents are eligible for group health insurance if they meet the general conditions and income limits. This information can be found on the municipality’s website.
