The municipality of Assen can continue with plans for Havenkwartier

The municipality of Assen can get started with the further elaboration of the plans for the Havenkwartier. The Municipal Executive has given the green light for the so-called draft structural vision.

This vision contains the most important starting points for the new neighborhood with approximately 650 homes that will be located in the Havenkwartier. In the coming period, the municipality will present the plans to the current users of the area, entrepreneurs and future residents.

“We are very happy to be surprised by other opinions and insights,” says alderman Cor Staal. “We organize physical meetings and it is also possible to view the plans online and provide input.”

Assen has been wanting to develop the impoverished industrial area around the Havenkade into a residential area for years. In 2012, for example, the Havenkwartier master plan was adopted. But due to budget cuts, the plan was shelved a few years later. Now the plans are being revived.

“Of course, the demand for affordable housing has increased enormously in recent years,” says alderman Staal. “Apart from that, the location of the Havenkwartier is unique: between the city center and the countryside and within walking distance of the station.”

The draft structural vision for the Havenkwartier states, among other things, that there will be room for different types of homes in the new district. From houses with a garden to apartments, and from expensive houses to social housing. There is room for green courtyards between the houses.

After the summer holidays, the vision will be officially available for inspection. According to the planning, the draft structural vision will be on the agenda of the municipal council around the turn of the year.
