The municipality is eyeing Borger-West for a pilot with tiny houses

The municipality of Borger-Odoorn has set its sights on Borger-West when it comes to the construction of tiny houses. There is at least room for ten of those small homes on the Koesteeg.

“We also have plans for other types of homes at this location,” says alderman Henk Zwiep. “Think of senior housing and starter homes. We want to develop different types of homes there.” Flex housing may also be an option.

The research into the placement of tiny houses has been going on for some time. Initiators have already reported to the municipality with plans for their own tiny houses. “We also called them with this intention, they responded positively,” says alderman Henk Zwiep.

Earlier locations such as the old municipal wharf were rejected due to fire safety and exits. The grounds of the Esdal College, which will be demolished when the new building is completed, also turned out not to be an option. “We have some other ideas when it comes to housing construction.”

There were not yet any conditions for the construction of tiny houses in the municipality. The college has now drafted it. “It’s about whether we opt for fixed or movable tiny houses. We opt for fixed places,” says Zwiep. “That provides peace of mind for the environment and also for the builder. And it is also easy to get a mortgage on a permanent tiny house.”

The future tiny houses in Borger may be a maximum of 60 square meters. “Often 50 square meters is used. But we do it a little bigger and don’t want all kinds of barns to be built. Like on the Lievingerveld in Midden-Drenthe, we don’t want it that way. We don’t want clutter.”

It is not yet known when the tiny houses can be built. After the summer, the municipality wants to consult with the surrounding area. This is a pilot with a maximum of ten houses. The pilot will be evaluated two years after the last one has been built.
