The municipal nurseries of Barcelona will maintain the start of the course on September 12

  • The city council is finishing closing the fringes of the agreement with the unions

The municipal nurseries from the city of Barcelona will maintain the start of the 2022-23 academic year on September 12 if the ongoing negotiations between the city council, the unions and the management of these educational centers prosper. This has been advanced by municipal sources to this newspaper. the stage of 0 to 3 yearsthe first cycle of early childhood education, is not regulated by the calendar order of the Department of Education, which affects the second cycle of early childhood education (from P-3 to P-5), primary and secondary, although it is true that traditionally all the educational centers of the Catalan capital began the course on the same day.

With this negotiation, the Barcelona’s town hall wanted to attend one of the teachers’ demands of stage 0-3, which was that of a one year moratorium to be able to plan and organize well the advancement of the school calendar for the 2023-24 academic year.

Keep in mind that in nurseries the course ends on July 15, later than in schools and institutes. This left teachers with even less time to prepare for the next course.

It remains to be seen now other municipalities will follow the example of Barcelona and will maintain the start of classes in nurseries on September 12, as usual, or follow the path opened by Educació and bring forward the return to school a week.

The fringes of the negotiation are closing this afternoon and it is expected that this Wednesday there may already be an official announcement of this measure. If the agreement prospers as everything seems to indicate, the agreement of the labor agreement of the Municipal Institute of Education of Barcelona will be modified.

This agreement will come just 24 hours before, on May 5, pre-registration opens in municipal nurseries. Thus, the academic year 22-23 will begin in these centers on September 12, after the Diada, as has been customary. While infant, primary and secondary students will start the course a week earlier, except for last minute surprises.

A one-year moratorium on the advancement of the school calendar is just what the primary and secondary teachers’ unions are also asking for, which are ‘at war’ with the ‘ministry’ that they lead Josep González-Cambray. This maintains the Government’s decision to advance the return to school as a measure of pedagogical improvement, conciliation and equity, according to its own arguments.

Precisely this Wednesday, the unions Ustec, Intersindical, Aspepc, CGT, Sindicat d’Estudiants and the aFFaC family association will explain the details of a mobilization on May 14 to demand improvements in public education from Educació. Also, the unions are finishing outlining the new days of protest, which could include weekly strikes in May or an indefinite strike in June.
