The multi-day demolition of the A9 viaduct Amstelveen starts today: this is what you need to know

The last hours of the A9 viaduct near Amstelveen have arrived. The largest crane in the Netherlands will start demolition of the usually busy road crossing tonight. For years, numerous cars drove over the viaduct, crossing the Keizer Karelweg. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians can experience a lot of inconvenience due to the demolition. NH gives an overview of everything you have to take into account in the coming days.

The dismantling of the viaduct will take a total of three days and four nights: contractor Veenix will start work tonight at 8 p.m. and will continue until 5 a.m. Monday morning. Those with sensitive ears should choose another weekend to visit the nearby Stadshart of Amstelveen.

The viaduct will be squeezed to pieces with a large grab. To prevent the large debris from damaging the asphalt of the Keizer Karelweg, steel road plates will be placed there, Rijkswaterstaat previously told NH. The falling debris will cause a lot of noise, that’s why local residents were offered earplugs and hotel vouchers. Through the live stream on this page you can follow the demolition of the viaduct.

The demolition of the viaduct also means that the Keizer Karelweg will be completely closed from tonight. Car traffic will be diverted via the Amsterdamseweg or the Beneluxbaan and cyclists via the Keerpuntweg. Pedestrians can use a shuttle service. This is on call between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM.

A9 open

Rijkswaterstaat has ensured that the A9 does not have to be closed. Traffic on the highway is currently routed along the viaduct via a ‘bypass’. The entrances and exits at Amstelveen-Stadshart that lead to Keizer Karelweg are closed. Only the ramp towards Amsterdam/Utrecht is accessible.

Because many buses run via Amstelveen Bus Station close to the viaduct, Connexxion has adjusted the routes of quite a few lines. You can read about all the changes to the timetable below.
