The department explained that a person cannot have two simultaneously valid documents. The issuance of digital passports is planned to begin in 2023; their registration will be voluntary, the authorities emphasized.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs will cancel a paper passport of a Russian citizen when a person is issued a digital document. About it TASS reported in the press center of the department.

“A citizen cannot have two valid passports at the same time,” the ministry explained.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs added that the issuance of electronic and foreign passports is not interconnected, the two documents will have different legal force.

The fact that a paper passport of a Russian citizen will be considered invalid after receiving an electronic one, in May 2021 reported Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko. He stressed that digital passports will be issued voluntarily.
