The 113th edition of the Milan San Remo, the first ‘monument’ of the season, which will be held on March 19, will start from the historic Maspes Velodrome in Milan and return to the traditional route that includes the Turchino, after two years of absence, the Capi, the Cipressa and the Poggio.
For the first time in its history, the Milan Sanremo will start from the Maspes-Vigorelli Velodrome, which has already hosted the Giro d’Italia and the Giro di Lombardia, but never the output of the “classicissima”.
The Milan San Remo will travel the classic route that for more than 110 years has connected Milan with the Western Riviera through Pavia, Ovada, the Passo del Turchino leading to Genua Voltri.
From there it will go west via Varazze, Savona, Albenga to Imperia and San Lorenzo al Mare where, after the classic Capi sequence (Mele, Cervo and Berta), riders will tackle the two climbs added in recent decades: the Cipressa (1982) and the Poggio di Sanremo (1961).
The ascent of the Poggio will be key and will start with 9 km to go with its 3.7 km length, average gradient of 4% and maximum of 8% in the section before reaching the top of the climb. The final part of the descent enters the urban San Remo, where the test could already be decided.
