He’s already gotten bigger, now he’s getting prettier again. The Mauerpark will have granite blocks to sit on, new table tennis tables, W-LAN islands and at least 150 climate-adapted trees. The bottom line is a cosmetic surgery for 16 million euros!
Insider tip used to be. The hip green space between Bernauer Strasse and Gleimstrasse has already attracted around seven million visitors. You can see that. Holey lawn, worn paths. And 33 trees are dead.
The first stage of the refurbishment has now started: At the Moritzhof, the play area will be increased by 400 m², the sheep and goats of the children’s farm will have a pasture with a hedge to run around. In the birch grove, 16 broken trees have to be replaced.

So that no expensive city water is used, a 90 meter deep hole is drilled – deep wells feed the new irrigation system. In the grove there are classic hydrants for hoses, on the large grassy plateau an underground system with retractable nozzles will be installed. Rain guards will later automatically indicate when they may get stuck in the ground.
“We have to be prepared for hot summers,” said State Secretary for the Environment Markus Kamrad (51, Greens) at the start of construction. His urban development colleague Christian Gaebler (57, SPD) said: “You have to have staying power for further development.”

It’s correct. The four stages will last until 2027, and individual areas will be closed at times.
The next stages: The drainage on the lawn will be laid (from autumn 2023), the sunny slope will be renovated (from 2025), completion of Gaudystrasse and Topstrasse (2027).
Lanterns are intended to ensure greater safety, and the paths are made barrier-free to prevent stumbling.
