The Matrix is everywhere and it also influences Jennifer Lopez’s style

“No.We do not notice it, but we are all trapped in these strange repetitive loops ». It is with phrases like these from its very first minute that the trailer for Matrix Resurrections, in theaters now, it’s creepy. For those who were already conscious in 1999, going back to talking about the “red pill or blue pill” when dealing with issues related to awareness, seems like a dejà-vù. But this is only one of the interpretations of reality. After all, as Morpheus teaches, «The Matrix is everywhere. It is around us. Even now, in the room we are in. ” And it is therefore also in our style choices, in our online purchases (see the news regarding Amazon today), in our wardrobes. Today’s “victim of the Matrix” is: Jennifer Lopez.

Matrix, a question of style

That idea of a simulated reality of which we are all victims, as Plato also explains in his Myth of the Cave, not surprisingly it had been the main inspiration of Wachowski sisters when they thought about the movie. And today it has magically spread, by osmosis, as it did twenty years ago, to everything: style of the stars primarily. It is no coincidence that the stylist who had curated the film, Kym Barrett, entered the history of fashion in the cinema by right with her black leather trench coats, plastic corsets and avant-garde dystopian goth-thots.

The film, since its first edition, has a precise and punctual iconography, which immediately made an impact on the public: from very long black leather coats to small and futuristic glasses, of the same color. A sort of uniform of ordinance from urban warrior which (unfortunately) seems to have dulled its combative value, just as the Matrix would like. As demonstrated, for example, by Kaia Gerber, born in 2001, who has repeatedly shown a style clearly inspired by the film.

The truth is that, since its release, Matrix has inspired a myriad of fashion shows, red carpets and street styles, with the best designers in the fashion industry who signed the look together. Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto’s Fall Winter 2008 collection drew inspiration, as did Tom Ford’s Fall Winter 2019 collection, which applied aesthetics to men’s and women’s ready-to-wear. Or a more recent Michael Kors Fall Winter 2021.

Superstars are crazy about it: JLo even launched a survey on Instagram to figure out how to perfect the look designed for the film’s premiere Marry Me. The most convinced is Bella Hadid who she often wears Matrix-inspired garments, just like Kendall Jennes, Hailey Baldwin, Naomi Campbell, are very fond of. Or Rihanna, David and Victoria Beckham. Up to Kanye West, who has always enjoyed dressing up his companions in this cyberpunk mood. Well yes, first Kim Kardashian, now Julia Fox, also in Balenciaga. After this, it is quite clear that he too ended up as a “victim of the Matrix”. But that’s another story.
