The magic of the Peperstraat in Zaandam: “It’s always a party here”

Rain or shine, there is always a lot of fun at the finish of the Dam tot Damloop in Peperstraat. The iconic finish street has been the unique end point of the largest running festival in the Netherlands for many years.

And last Sunday, the 37th edition of the Dam tot Damloop was again a resounding success. Thousands of runners completed the ten English miles (16.1 km) from Amsterdam to Zaandam and often crossed the line smiling. “It is a fantastic party here,” says Mayor Jan Hamming of Zaanstad. “People like to come here and this is also the place where the Dam tot Damloop should finish.”

Due to planned renovations in the Peperstraat, the organization of the event will most likely have to move to another finish location for a number of years. “The Peperstraat is the Champs-Élysées of running. And if you take the cobblestones out of Paris-Roubaix it would be a shame. The same applies to the Peperstraat and Zaandam. You can leave for a while, but he has to come back,” said speaker Jan Van der Meulen.
