The Magallón affair | By Jorge Fauró

To the former mayor of Magallonan Aragonese population of around 1,200 inhabitants, have hunted him with some peccadilloes inside the hard drive of a municipal computer. Namely: images and videos with sexual content, according to the complaint that the Government team has presented to the Prosecutor’s Office. The transfer of powers to the substitute was a surprise.

Then they will say that this type of ‘affairs’ only happens in big cities, but you have to see how rural Spain is. As news and reactions on the matter become known, the matter becomes exciting. According to the complaint that is already in the possession of the prosecutor, in addition to the files in question – it is deduced from the information that these are images of sex between adults, no trace of minors-, photographs have also been found – presumably taken carelessly – of municipal employees and residents of the town, reports ‘El Periódico de Aragón’. The context is not specified, but one can imagine that this type of action could have been carried out, for example, between a granting of a building license and the preparation of the General Plan, which, although it usually gives a lot of room for controversy, does not withstand comparison with the noble art of voyeurism and other similar activities of our representatives.

The issue has been increasing in intensity as new aspects of the case became known. In the City Hall offices it was found a fake closet in which a used condom was found, a blister of Cialis (what Viagra is called in ‘vulgaris villae’ language) and a CD with “white stripes” (ouch), an obvious sign that allows us to get an idea of where the shots are going. What was missing was what, in my opinion, is the most surprising thing about the case (the above can no longer surprise us): monthly telephone bills for subscriptions to services such as ‘Pocoyó House’ and ‘Caillou and friends’, applications both dedicated to children.

The whole set allows us to imagine a profile of Victor Chueca, which is the name of this former PSOE mayor who is fond of naturalistic photography (it seems) and who held the position for 20 years. His replacement in the Mayor’s Office and beneficiary recipient of such an inheritance, Esteban Lagota, has been more than restrained in his statements: “I did not even remotely think that something like this could happen. I have never been a public person. It is this candid way that we newbies have.” You have to admire this man of singular candor. What an elegant way to question his rival while saving the good name of Magallón, which, after all, is the first obligation of corporations.

Transferred to high politics we would call it ‘sense of State’, which is precisely what Lagota has shown. Imagine if all the equipment found in Magallón had occurred in the context of the national political scene, where naivety would have given way to ‘lawfare’ and the reactions would take over the ‘trending topic’ in Elon Musk’s condominiums.

What happened in this small Zaragoza municipality shows is that Poorly practiced politics is a matter of scales. On different levels, inflating bills in a town hall of 1,200 residents is not far from the ‘Kitchen’ or the ‘Gürtel’. A fake closet with who knows what and a folder with photos of neighbors and municipal employees make up the miniature world of any Villarejo apprentice. The principle is the same. Perhaps Lagota is right and what is missing is candor.
