The LOTTO jackpot can increase to 50 million euros in the future – but winning it will be more difficult

From November 2023, an exciting change will come into effect in the classic LOTTO 6aus49: the jackpot will be bigger, but more difficult to win.

LOTTO classic 6aus49

According to LOTTO.de, around 10 million participants try their luck in the popular classic LOTTO 6aus49 every week in the draws on Wednesday and Saturday. Last year, LOTTO 6aus49 recorded around 3.84 billion euros in gaming stakes nationwide.

Previously, the amount of the LOTTO jackpot was limited to a maximum value of 45 million euros in accordance with the State Treaty on Gambling 2021 (GlüStV 2021). If the LOTTO jackpot reached the maximum value, there was a compulsory payout. This meant that game participants had a chance of hitting the jackpot even with fewer than six correct numbers plus a super number. If prize category one remained unoccupied in the drawing, the jackpot went to prize category two – i.e. lottery players who had six correct numbers without a super number. If this prize category was also vacant, the next lower prize category was chosen – and so on until one or more winners could be determined.

Higher jackpot of 50 million euros possible

From November 1, 2023, the jackpot can now increase to 50 million euros. In addition to the increased maximum jackpot, another change to LOTTO 6aus49 will come into force for the drawing on Wednesday, November 1st, 2023: The jackpot will only be paid out for six correct numbers plus the super number. This “makes the game more about luck […] further strengthened,” says LOTTO.de.

If prize category one is not filled when the maximum jackpot is reached, the maximum winnings remain in the jackpot until at least one player has correctly guessed the six winning numbers plus the super number. After the maximum jackpot has been won, the next jackpot phase starts with the distribution of winnings from the stakes plus the contribution amount. All additional bets placed in the meantime that exceed the maximum winning amount remain in prize category one and will be used in the next draw after the jackpot has been won. This means that the next jackpot starts with a higher amount.

According to LOTTO.de, there is no change in the mathematical chances of winning. The probability of winning the first prize category is still around one in 140 million.

Changes also affect additional lottery game 77

There are also similar changes for the additional lottery Game 77, which is most often played in conjunction with LOTTO 6aus49: According to a statement from LOTTO.de, the jackpot of Game 77 can increase to a legally prescribed maximum limit of a maximum of 10 million euros and only with the with the correct seven-digit ticket number. The future regulations for the distribution of the maximum jackpot will be aligned with the innovations of LOTTO 6aus49.
