The Liceu wants to open a second venue in the Imax of the Port of Barcelona

  • The abandoned Imax venue will collapse and in its place a theater capable of hosting newly created opera, dance and family shows will be built

The executive committee of the Gran Teatre del Liceu has given the green light to carry out the necessary studies to have a new headquarters in the Port of Barcelona, in a new cultural facility that will be built on the land currently occupied by the Imax. This building, in disuse for years, will be demolished to create the new Liceu Mar. This new headquarters will allow the Liceu to host small-format proposals that do not have space in the historic building on La Rambla. The new space would become the newly created opera center, an engine that would drive new titles from all areas: composition, dramaturgy and stage direction. These facilities would make it possible to complement the educational activity and the Petit Liceu as well as establish a stable dance season and program chamber operas.

“We agree to make a port that is more open, civic, cultural and rooted in the territory. As a city council we will work to make it possible,” said Deputy Mayor Janet Sanz. A few months ago, the City Council closed the door to another cultural project of the coliseum in the port, linked to a Hermitage franchise.

The Liceu is genuinely from Barcelona, a theater with 175 years of history whose reopening in 1999 after the fire that devastated it in 1994 did not have enough space in the building to host small and medium format proposals. Projects headed to release new operas created by local composers and artists, they are currently performed in the Foyer and other theater spaces that are not always suitable.

The executive commission of the Liceu, chaired by Salvador Alemany, president of the Foundation, has given its support to continue working on the technical and economic studies necessary to verify the viability of the new Liceu Mar project, a proposal resulting from previous conversations between the teams at the Port of Barcelona, the Barcelona City Council and the Liceu itself. The Gran Teatre and related organizations will work on a preliminary project for the new facility that would be located in the Port of Barcelona.

The new building, which would become the second headquarters of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, is a strategic axis that the Gran Teatre has been studying for some time. This new space aims to be a multipurpose and dynamic space for the city of Barcelona, open to all citizens. These coming months should serve to analyze the viability of the project.
