Lawyer Francesc de Paula Jufresa Patau has revealed, in an article to EL PERIÓDICO, that he offered the former president of the Generalitat Carlos Puigdemont mediate before the PSOE to try to negotiate the pardon. The lawyer, who in December 2019 was the first person to formally request pardon for the prisoners of the ‘procés’, maintains that Puigdemont did not authorize him to hold these conversations and reproaches him for now wanting to “use a absolutely personal and disinterested management to the detriment of the government party and to harm it in the eminent electoral campaign”.
Jufresa reports that he contacted one of Puigdemont’s lawyers, Jaume Alonso Cuevillas, currently a Junts deputy, to raise the possibility of requesting an “early pardon” from the Government, an option that the law that regulates this measure of grace contemplates without the need for the defendant to return to Spain. However, Cuevillas’ response was exhaustive: “Please, don’t do it.” Jufresa assures that he did not do anything, but thanks the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezthat he did grant a pardon to the prisoners of 1-O.
The lawyer harshly criticizes Puigdemont, whom he accuses of “lying” for reiterating that there was a mediation attempt by the PSOE to offer him a pardon and regrets that he “instruments” a “sad situation” for “hurt the government that granted the pardons, to the evident benefit of the party that is threatening to modify the pardon law so that in a similar case they could not occur in the future”, in a clear allusion to the PP.
