The last of the Dominicans have left the monastery in Zwolle: ‘With us the life of the brothers here dies out’

“You should never move old trees.” Nevertheless, the last four brothers of the Dominican monastery in Zwolle had to leave their home. The 123-year-old complex needs to be renovated and was put up for sale. The four eighty-somethings had no choice but to move. Life in a regular home is especially difficult for brother Dominicus (85), after 63 years in the monastery: “I cried, would rather go back now than tomorrow.”
