The jury has refused to indict rap artist Travis Scott for the tragic Astroworld concert in 2021, reports the Washington Post.
Travis Scott performed in November 2021 at the Astroworld festival. As a result of the performance, 10 people were killed and more than 300 people were injured. According to Texas authorities, the deaths were caused by lack of oxygen in the crowd.
– In this case, the grand jury concluded that no crime has occurred and that an individual person cannot be held criminally responsible, the prosecutor Kim Ogg stated in court on Thursday, June 29.
– It is very tragic that 10 innocent people were killed while trying to have fun and enjoy music, although it is a routine thing for us, where we don’t always understand to think for our safety. But a tragedy is not always a crime and not every death is always a murder, he continued.
The jury also decided not to press charges against other people associated with the festival. Among the persons acquitted are the festival manager Brent Silberstein.
Acted as Scott’s lawyer Kent Schaffer said in a statement that he was particularly saddened by the amount of sponsorship deals and collaborations Scott has lost as a result of the tragedy.
– From day one, we have believed in Travis’s innocence in this matter. Today, a jury said they agreed. Now he is free to perform and continue his career without the threat of prosecution, lawyer Schaffer stated.
