The judge charges the management team of the Aragó nursing home for the death of eight elderly people in a salmonella outbreak

The judge of Barcelona Fernando Luis Criado Navamuel has summoned to testify as investigated (previously accused) administrator of the Aragó geriatric, Alejandro Cabedo Pons, to its director until last year, María Dolores Ortiz, as well as the governess and the doctor from the centerby the salmonella outbreak which caused the death of eight elderly people during the summer of 2022. A case that EL PERIÓDICO uncovered and that has forced changes in the residence inspection system in emergency situations.

Those investigated must appear in the Court of Instruction number 17 of Barcelona on March 4 to be able to be questioned, according to the writing to which this newspaper has had access. The magistrate has also summoned a total of 17 witnesses to testify that same day and on March 6.

The court The judicial process opened on July 13 last year by virtue of the investigation proceedings carried out by the Barcelona Prosecutor’s Office for an alleged crime of reckless homicide and its corresponding complaint. For the magistrate, according to that resolution, the facts could constitute a crime and he agreed that those reported by the prosecutor’s office would be summoned to testify as those under investigation, at the same time that denied the public prosecution’s request to close the center at that time, “without prejudice to the fact that such a measure may be adopted throughout the procedure” and the possibility that the Administration could do so, which also ruled it out.

La denuncia de fiscalía expone que desde finales de julio hasta septiembre de 2022, en la residencia, ubicada en la calle de Aragó de Barcelona y con capacidad para 100 personas (57 plazas públicas), se produjo un brote de salmonela que afectó a 39 residentes, de los cuales 15 fueron hospitalizados y ocho murieron. A pesar de tener la obligación de hacerlo, subraya a acusación, los ahora investigados no notificaron ninguno de los casos a la Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona, negaron el contagio de los residentes y tampoco comunicaron la muerte de siete de los ocho fallecidos.
