At the end of November, after months of legal battles and contested fines, the Ministry of Transport published on its portal the list of approved speed cameras present on Italian territory: this is a detailed list resulting from a census carried out by Municipalities, local authorities and law enforcement agencies, who were obliged to communicate through the Ministry’s telematic platform. essential data of each appliancei.e. make, model, serial number, version, type, possible presence of boxes or protective structures, as well as location in kilometers and direction of travel. Such census was made necessary to put an end to the long controversy centered on the presumed legitimacy or otherwise of the fines received by motorists caught committing an infringement: sentences of the Court of Cassation had in fact established the citizens’ right not to pay fines imposed by non-uniform deviceseffectively forcing the government to take action. Whoever receives a fine for speeding, therefore, once they have received the report, can consult the MIT portal and verify the presence or absence of the tutor on the list of approved ones, which appear to be just over 3,600: if this is not included, then the fine can be contested.

Tutors nationwide

Before we can delve deeper into the matter, it is important to point out that the list is not fixed, but dynamicsubject to continuous updates: in fact, nothing prevents local authorities from eliminating a tutor or registering new equipment at any time, as long as they respect all the criteria necessary for approval. For this reason, administrations must constantly keep the database updated with the tools that they acquire and dispose of over time. From a first analysis, what emerges as a clear fact is the difference in devices installed in the north and south of the peninsula: in fact, dominating the ranking of the regions with the most speed cameras installed is the Lombardywith 503 tutors registered and approved as of 2 December 2025, of which 51 only in Milan and its metropolitan area, followed by Veneto, Emilia Romagna And Piedmont with 444, 420 and 379 speed cameras installed in the regional territory respectively. These are important numbers, especially when compared to those present in some regions of Southern Italy, such as La Pugliawhich again as of 2 December 2025 registers 56 approved tutors, or the Calabriawith only 47. Even the Lazio it does not stand a harsh comparison with the devices installed in Northern Italy, with only 196 approved speed cameras, of which 69 in Rome and its metropolitan area.
