The PR trip for influencers organized by Shein, which sells ultra-fast fashion, was completely condemned online.
ALL OVER PRESS
A group of American fashion influencers and designers have received backlash online after attending a PR tour organized by Shein. Fashion influencers published glowing reviews of the trip.
Shein showed visitors the company’s “innovation center,” a bright and spacious facility with modern fabric cutters and material-carrying robots.
Shein is the fastest-growing Chinese giant in the notorious ultra-fast fashion, selling trendy clothes at low prices, especially using Tiktok marketing. The company’s working conditions and procurement practices are in the dark, and the production methods are allegedly unethical.
Kenya Freemana designer who has also sold clothes on Shein, traveled to China and Singapore at Shein’s invitation and shared videos on her Instagram account.
– The amount of online hate was unprecedented, Freeman said for CNN.
Freeman tells the site that the rage directed at him affected his mental health. He also said that he did not defend the company and is not responsible for its actions.
Freeman received comments criticizing him and other influencers on the trip for taking part in the trip of a company that committed human rights abuses. He was also asked if influencers do not understand the environmental effects of fast fashion.
ALL OVER PRESS
A plus-size influencer and model who was on Shein’s trip Dani Carbonari tried to explain in an Instagram post on Monday that he took the trip to address “rumors” plaguing the company.
He has since deleted an earlier Instagram post in which he said, “Shein did everything he could to show us the truth, but also to continue to improve and be the best he can be.”
Messages from other trip influencers contained similar language. Some said they had spoken with factory workers and were impressed by the conditions.
In a statement, Shein said the social media videos posted by the influencers were genuine.
– Shein is committed to transparency and this trip reflects one way we listen to feedback, offering an opportunity to show a group of influencers how Shein works and giving them the opportunity to share their own views with their followers.
