TAmong the inspirations for the character of pop star Jocelyn, Lily Rose-Depp quote Sharon Shone in basic instinct. Judging by first episode Of The Idol – already available on NOW and on air tonight at 11pm on Sky – the less sophisticated one makes you think more Rebecca Of Body of Evidence. And therefore a Madonna. Also present in the Sam Levinson series with Like a prayer and with Popularsoundtrack song recorded with Playboi Carti and The Weeknd (performer, producer and writer of The Idol). Or as the only true talent. After all, in this presentation of the character, Jocelyn is busy building a sort of comeback. We know of a nervous breakdown, a suspended tour, of tickets that are not sold for the new dates. In the choreography of the video, the same and transgressive as hundreds of others, she is weak, she doesn’t believe in it, she comes seen as a human case also by the entourage, if only he could dance Dyanne, the stunt double, he says to the girl with the perfect movements (actually Blackpink member Jennie Kim).
Some intuition, however, remained. Jocelyn’s build-rebuild
It is very possible that the next episodes of The Idol are better than the first, even better than the shot-balling that took place in Cannes. However, if we are to trust the tone of the opening, of presentation launches about «a transgressive look at the music industry», the patina, here, is the substance. The codes on which the events, the biographies, the characters rotate – circus masks of which they have nothing lurid and pimping – they drown the atmosphere in a vague sick turgidity. Not dangerous at all.
Not at all connected, as pop music always is, the divine ray and hell of repetition, with a sense of death. Instead, a style emerges from a fashion report, from an inquiry into «people of the night», with the novelty of the web that disgraces and doesn’t even ruin; perhaps Rossella O’Hara meant this with «tomorrow is another day», that tomorrow, in fact, nobody remembers yesterday’s controversy on the net.
It is very probable, too, that Jocelyn’s nature is perfected, that it goes beyond suspension between victim and awareness. After all, she demonstrates more than once that she possesses original reading skills, that lucidity that only happens to the bewildered to hit the point, to close conversations. Or perhaps this stalemate is one of Sam Levinson’s habits with regard to female characters. Zendaya’s Rue Bennett in Euphoria sail in the same statehelped by others who then rejects or ruined by others who continue to seek.
Small difference. With that role, of drug addict, Zendaya has won two Emmys and his career exploded; with the role of Jocelyn and 5 episodes still to come Lily Rose-Depp it’s closer to infamy than an acceptance speech.
