The people of Teruel have woken up with great disgust. the iconic Source of the Bull of Teruel, emblem of the city and epicenter of all self-respecting activity, has collapsed this Sunday. It was at 7:00 a.m. during the work to remove the 23 ropes used during the celebration of the National Congress of the Rope Bull.
The seven-meter-high column on which the torico rested has collapsed and the fall has affected the figure in a horn and a leg. Municipal technicians are already working on it and the mayors of Teruel, Emma Bujhas approached the place where the municipal workers have verified that the iron that carried the column inside was “rotten”.
“Fortunately no one was hurt because if it had happened with the square full during the Heifer this would have been infinitely worse” stated Buj, who added that “work is already underway so that it will soon shine again in all its splendor and that it be restored before the Fiestas de la Vaquilla”, which are held at the beginning of July.

The monument consists of a circular fountain with a fluted and banded column that in its center is finished off with a bronze bulge of the heraldic animal. The primitive fountain was made in 1558 replacing the cisterns of 1375.
The cup was larger than the current one and was decorated with bull heads throwing watercrowned by a bronze bull decorated with a star between the horns.
This Saturday the city experienced a very intense day. Thousands of people have enjoyed the capital of Teruel since the National Congress of the Rope Bull began, with more than 4,000 congressmen and many other companions and fans of this celebration, who have transformed the city into a great day of celebration, similar to the beginning of the Angel.
The roped bulls began to walk the streets from the early hours of the morning in one of the most anticipated moments of the congress, which celebrates its seventeenth edition this year and returns after the break imposed for two years by the coronavirus pandemic.

The company that usually repairs the fountain in which the column and the torico stand, in the square of the same name, has already removed the pieces to start the restoration work and to have “as soon as possible the torico in conditions”, explained Buj.
The mayor has assessed that no personal damage has been caused and has pointed out that although the congress continues, the ropes were being removed so that the corpus procession which is celebrated this Sunday.
