Run-down and creepy – now the pedestrian tunnel between the ICC, bus station and the exhibition center in Charlottenburg is to be closed.
According to the transport senate, there are several reasons for the end of the ICC tunnel: maintenance and cleaning costs would fall and it would be more convenient for pedestrians to cross the street above ground.
The Senate Department is therefore calling for the crossing system to be modified to be safe for pedestrians and for the tunnel to be closed.
The tunnel system was opened in 1975, and in 2019 the tunnel was placed under monument protection – for many years it was an impertinence for anyone who had to pass through it.
However, there are no concrete plans for the redesign, nor is there a timetable, according to a spokeswoman for the Transport Senate.
