“The Hunter”: a prosecutor against the mafias

Next Thursday, March 17, at 10 p.m., the Europa Europa channel will premiere the third season of the Italian series “The Hunter” (Il cacciatore), a story based on the autobiographical novel “Cacciatore di mafiosi”, which recounts the life of magistrate Alfonso Sabella during the war with the Sicilian mafia, in 1993.

The official, who in fiction is called Saverio Barone, was a member of the anti-mafia team of the city of Palermo. His ambition to crack down on local organized crime emerged shortly after the 1992 bombings, in which two judges were assassinated. In one remembered as Capaci, a section of a highway was dynamited; in another, that of Via D’Amelio, bombs exploded in the middle of the downtown circuit. Thanks to the impetus of the then young prosecutor, dozens of criminals were arrested, in what were the last years of Cosa Nostra’s lead, after the arrest of “capo” Salvatore “Totò” Riina.

Alfonso, who has also committed himself to the creation of this proposal, is played by Francesco Montanari, who won the Flaiano and Cannes Series International awards for best male lead for his role in this production. The story continues through eight shocking episodes.

In the first of this new installment, called “Boom”, Barone is in the crosshairs of the mobster Vito Vitale and that is why he has been living for months in a bunker in the basement of the Palermo Prosecutor’s Office, without seeing his ex-wife Giada or his daughter Carlotta. There is another reason why he isolated himself: he must work on the secret investigation of Pietro Aglieri and Bernardo Provenzano, representatives of a mafia variant, capable of infiltrating offices and ministries and, therefore, much more dangerous than the “massacre” wing of the then impregnable criminal organization.

“El Cazador” is a co-production of Cross Productions and BetaFilms in collaboration with Rai Fiction, created by Marcello Izzo, Silvia Ebreul and Alfonso Sabella himself. This latest installment features the special intervention of Peppino Mazzota, the unforgettable Fazio from the “El Comisario Montalbano” series.
