In two years, the European Football Championship will take place in Germany. Where the final round will be held four years later is still open. Now there are first concrete indications.
The hosts for the 2028 European Football Championship have been decided. At least that’s what the English newspaper “The Times” reports. According to her, the final round will be held on the British Isles. The United Kingdom and Ireland should therefore be awarded the contract to host the event. The application period ends on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Other interested parties were once Italy, Russia and Turkey. Italy has decided to apply for the EM 2032 and calculates better chances there. After the attack on Ukraine, Russia is no longer an option anyway. According to media reports, Turkey is said to be withdrawing its interest after several unsuccessful bids because it sees little chance against the British-Irish bid.
The paper reports that Uefa will make a formal decision on April 7 to nominate Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as the 2028 hosts.
It also means that the Continental Confederation has set a deadline of the end of the year to receive all the necessary guarantees from governments. Only in the event that these are not received in time will the tournament be re-advertised.
Decision will be made in September 2023
The final award for the 2028 final round will take place in September 2023 in a double pack with the EM 2032.
In 1996 the EM took place for the last time on the island. At that time, England was the sole host. At the pan-European Championship in recent years, several games took place in Glasgow’s Hampden Park and in London’s Wembley Stadium, where the final was also played.
Dublin was also planned as a venue. However, since the Irish government could not guarantee fans in the stadium due to the corona pandemic, Uefa canceled the venue at short notice.
