The hiking trail in Hamburg will be called the Karl Lagerfeld Promenade

In Hamburg, an approximately 155 meter long footpath and hiking trail along a canal in the city center could soon be called the Karl Lagerfeld Promenade. The Hamburg-Mitte district assembly passed a corresponding proposal from the SPD, CDU and FDP factions on Thursday evening, as the FDP faction announced in Hamburg on Friday.

The district’s three-party coalition selected the path ‘Am Alsterfleet’ from Neuer Wall 75 to Adolphsbrücke for the renaming because it was a central place that could be linked to his work, as the application shows. Fashion designer Lagerfeld was a regular customer of a bookstore on Neuer Wall, which he is said to have called his ‘intellectual delicatessen’.

Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg in 1933 and always remained connected to the city. February 19, 2024 is the fifth anniversary of his death. The selected section of the Alster hiking trail should ideally be given its new name on the anniversary of his death in 2024, said FDP politician Timo Fischer. (dpa)
