The highest number of NEETs is in Italy and most of them are women

hyear between 15 and 29 years, they don’t work, they don’t study and are not in vocational training e most of them are women.

Are the “Neet”, phenomenon now sadly known throughout Europe, but that in Italy it assumes much more alarming proportions.

Women and work: female employment numbers are improving

Neet, because women are more

Indeed, ours is the country with the highest number of people falling into this audience: in 2020 there were more than 3 million, with a female prevalence of 1.7 million, or 56%.

To the figure, already bad in itself, it should be added that the female prevalence remains unchanged over the yearsdemonstrating that it is much more difficult for a woman to get out of this condition.

The influence of stereotypes and social pressures

Gender inequalities are also reproduced by observing the roles in the family of NEETs, where there is, in fact, a large difference between women and men which sees 23% of NEET mothers compared to 3% of NEET fathers.

A situation often determined by stereotypes or real social pressures who, on the one hand, still see greater importance given to the role of women within the family.

And on the other they present a labor market that favors the hiring of young men compared to young women, and makes it difficult to reconcile work with childcare.

NEETs no longer dream

But these conventions from which girls still struggle to free themselves today, as told by Dossier 2022 of the Indifesa Observatory created by Terre des Hommesprevent them from dreaming and planning their future “big”.

At least more than half of the interviewees, 53.96%, who believe that choices regarding future studies or careers, ambitions and passions are limited by macho stereotypes and legacies.

The resourcefulness of Italian women

A pity because although last in Europe as a female occupationthe country is not behind in terms of women’s resourcefulness, given that the Italians are the most enterprising in Europe.

Italy matters 1,469,000 female entrepreneurs and self-employed workersthe highest number among EU countries, with a higher level of education than their male colleagues.

An army of female graduates and entrepreneurs, of course

In fact, 41.1% are university graduates, a percentage that is almost double compared to 21.4% of men. Without forgetting that our country has an army of 1.3 million female businesses, equal to 22.2% of the national productive fabric. With Regions such as Campania and Puglia which record the record, however.

For this reason, girls shouldn’t resign themselves to imagining a future without some satisfaction. The models, even if few, are there. And there is also space: c‘you just need someone to fight to occupy and conquer more and more.
