In today’s vertiginous work, the training and development of teams face a recurring challenge: lack of commitment and poor knowledge retention. How many times do we invest in courses or programs that, soon, are forgotten, without really impacting the performance or motivation of our collaborators? The response often lies in disconnection with a meaningful learning experience.
This is where gamification comes into play, and we are not talking about simply adding “games” to work. We talk about applying science behind human motivation, the principles that make us get hooked to certain activities, to transform the way we learn and develop professionally. It is a methodology that uses gaming elements and mechanics in non -recreational contexts, such as business field, to solve real problems and enhance results.
The true power of gamification lies in its ability to activate deep psychological springs that drive action and commitment. My experience of more than 10 years in this field has shown me that there are three fundamental pillars that gamification explodes with mastery to “light the internal spark” of motivation: the Autonomythe Mastery and the Purpose.
The Autonomy It is the freedom to choose, to make decisions on how to address a challenge or how to progress in learning. When a person feels that he has control over his way, his commitment multiplies. Gamification integrates this by allowing, for example, different learning routes, the choice of challenges or flexibility in the rhythm of progress, making the process its own and not an imposition.
Then there is the Masterythat innate search to continuously improve, to feel competent and to overcome challenges. It drives us the satisfaction of seeing our progress and dominating new skills. Gamification nourishes this desire through levels of levels, experience points, progress bars or badges that mark milestones, offering a clear path where each achievement is a step towards excellence.
Finally, the Purpose Connect what we do with greater meaning. We want to feel that our actions contribute to something significant, that we not only do a task, but that we are part of a transcendent mission. Gamification achieves this through narratives that give meaning to challenges, missions with a “why”, or recognizing how the individual contribution impacts the collective. Connect activities to a greater purpose transforms the obligation into a mission.
I am Rodrigo Borgia, and I have been dedicated to gamification for more than a decade. My work focuses on exploring new forms of fluid learning that enable skills and enable tangible results in organizations. I have had the privilege of working with various companies and teams, both in face -to -face and virtual training, applying these methodologies to make motivation the motor force of success.
This understanding of the psychology of the game is the real engine behind a training or successful HR initiative. If you are feeling that your teams lack that “extra” of motivation, and you seek to transform engagement and learning in your organization, gamification offers a proven path. It is time to think beyond traditional formats and invest in experiences that are not only remembered, but inspire a genuine commitment and lasting results.
To take the first step and start applying these principles in your programs, I have prepared a practical guide: Gamification Checklist. It is a simple tool that will allow you to immediately identify how to transform your training and shoot the motivation of your equipment.
