The statements of Elisa Carrió they again caused a shock in Together for Change. While the opposition suspected that the electoral board had already been determined, the leader of the Civic Coalition joined the discussion: “I am going to be a candidate,” she announced. Bomb.
Although he had not warned his work team that he would launch himself like this, without lapsing and in a radio interview, no one was surprised: for a long time he had flirted with the idea of running for president “to guarantee the unity” of the space that he co-founded eight years ago.
Strategy. Given the lack of consensus in the candidacies of the PRO and the UCR, Carrió considered that the plan had to be changed. From one side appear Horacio Rodríguez Larreta and Patricia Bullrich. From the other they hold Gerardo Morales and Facundo Manes. Nobody wants to get off. That’s why “Lilita” was added.
“The best strategy now is to have a huge electoral offer in presidential matters and in governors, but a unity in national and provincial legislators,” the former deputy proposed after launching.
For his candidacy there will be no formal act, nor grand launches. At least for now they are not on the agenda. After releasing the news, Carrió assured that he will take his time to start the campaign: he will do it around May, when the elections are already on the people’s radar.
In any case, he will remain on the agenda with his historical fights, mainly against the Court judge Ricardo Lorenzettiagainst whom he wants to advance in a political trial, but leaving the other ministers on the sidelines.
With this announcement, Carrió formally returns from retirement, after resigning from her seat as a deputy in October 2019. It had been 26 years since she had started in politics and she believed that it was time to dedicate herself to other projects: teaching classes and developing her clothing brand, two things that had been left behind. She did them, but without detaching herself from the leadership of the Civic Coalition. She now also confirms that she would be willing to hold a position again.
Although “Lilita” knows that her chances are slim. For this reason, her announcement was accompanied by an incredible and contradictory caveat: “I am a candidate to guarantee unity. I don’t intend to win,” she said. Rare way to launch.
That caused there to be second readings of his announcement in the internal opposition. Race politics, Congress is never off their radar. In these votes, the Civic Coalition renews six seats and the former deputy will do the impossible for her space, at least retain that share of power. Being one of the opposition’s pre-candidates places her in a better place from which to negotiate.
On Macri’s birthday, Carrió moved the board of Together for Change and got on the presidential race. Although with a slightly more austere plan than that of reaching the Casa Rosada: he is barely satisfied with being a factor of unity in the opposition.
