One of the most famous balls in football history was up for auction. The ball that Diego Maradona hit in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup against England, was called for two million pounds, or about 2.28 million euros, but its owner did not agree to give it up, reports Guardian.

The ball had to be sold at a discounted price, as the Mirror magazine believed in October that the ball would reach the three million pound mark. The jersey worn by Maradona, which was sold for seven million pounds, was used as a comparison. At that time, the value of the shirt was expected to be four million, and a corresponding jump in price was expected for the ball as well.

Negotiations about the legendary leather ball continue.

The ball entered the annals of football when Maradona beat the goalkeeper by Peter Shilton over to the England goal. The Argentinian knew how to cover his punch skillfully, and the judges did not see anything suspicious in the situation.

“Like someone hit it,” Gary Lineker, who scored in the match, tweeted in October. PDO

Maradona later described that the ball slightly hit his head and the hand of God. Maradona, who died two years ago, scored a wonderful solo goal in the same match, which was later voted the hit of the century.

Argentina overthrew England 2–1 with Maradona’s goals and eventually went on to win the entire World Cup tournament in Mexico. Maradona was chosen as the best player of the tournament.

The ball belongs to the head referee of the quarter-final match to Bin Nasser, who has revealed that he did not see Maradona raise his hand. He hoped to get help from the linesman, but he also accepted the goal without hesitation.

Maradona passed away at the age of 60 in November 2020.
