The Hague arranges emergency accommodation for a ‘very acute situation’ in Ter Apel

The need at the registration center in Ter Apel is so great this weekend that asylum seekers are in danger of having to sleep on the grass, the municipality of The Hague reports. The municipality is prepared to accommodate one hundred to one hundred and twenty registered asylum seekers in the NH Hotel in Kijkduin from Sunday due to this ‘very acute situation’.

A spokesperson for the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) confirms that it is ‘a very dire situation’.

According to the municipality, how many people are actually accommodated at Deltaplein depends on the influx. There are fifty to sixty rooms available for adult men, women and couples.

There is no place for children. The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) provides guidance for the group, pays the costs and is supported by the Red Cross.

A COA spokesperson says that so far no one has had to spend the night on the grass. “We bring them in for the night and house them in, for example, the IND waiting rooms.”

He said that COA is very pleased with the help from the municipality of The Hague, but emphasizes that despite the fact that the situation at the registration center remains ‘dire’.
