The Government sees little environmental logic in MAT lines like those of Forestalia

These networks do not intend to transfer energy to distribute between houses but simply connecting the renewable energy produced to the grid. The striking thing about the case is that Forestalia, to achieve this, proposes save a route of more than 100 kilometers, between different locations in both autonomous communities. These projects are in the pipeline and one of them has prior authorization, but Ministry sources consulted by EL PERIÓDICO insist that these are reports made by technicians, not political decisions. Furthermore, they highlight that this It does not mean that they will be completed.

Two of them still have to overcome some environmental impact assessment reports that are already being prepared by the technicians of the Department of Climate Action, specifically, in the Environmental Policies department. These same sources affirm that the evacuation lines are complex because they have a great impact on the landscape. Furthermore, they recognize that there are significant collision risks for several protected birds. Then, there is the difficulty of construction workwith clearing included, and access for heavy machinery.

This causes, according to the Ministry led by Teresa Ribera, that when so many kilometers extend, the consequences for the territory multiply. Therefore, for it to be done it must be very justified, they maintain.

Another model

The sources consulted also state that a model in which renewable energy parks evacuate in nearby knots and do not project lines that must cover such a distance. However, as the company Red Eléctrica is obliged to offer to energy companies a point to connect to the network, when nearby substations do not have the capacity for more connections, evacuation in distant areas is proposed.

In this situation, many companies give up and they prefer not to continue with the project. However, Forestalia has chosen to continue with the process. The Government assures that its priority is locate new renewable facilities in anthropized areassuch as roofs, urban or industrial spaces, and when this is not possible, reduce negative impacts as much as possible.

They remember that they only obtain final authorization projects that respect the environment and that are always incorporated corrective or compensatory measures (for example the creation of protected natural spaces for each hectare occupied). After the environmental impact declaration, normally, in 75% of cases, the company’s plan undergoes forced modifications, such as area reductions. They emphasize that the Ministry is working on a more diversified energy model that promotes self-consumption.
