The Generalitat presented this Monday the launch of the nanosatellite sponsored by the Government this April, which will allow the deployment of a orbiting laboratory to validate technologies and services developed in Catalonia, within the framework of the NewSpace Catalonia Strategy. The Secretary of Digital Policies said it this Monday, Gina Tostin the act to present the mission together with the director of technology and innovation of the i2CAT Foundation, Sergi Figuerolaand the CEO and co-founder of the firm that owns the Sateliot satellite, Jaume Sanpera.
It will take place together with the i2CAT Foundationentity that manages the mission and that has tendered the service, and satellitea company that develops the satellite and some services that “have a value of 650,000 euros”, has pointed out toast. In addition to deploying the lab in orbit, the mission also aims to improve 5G connectivity through the use of the new 5G NB-Iot connectivity protocol from the satellite.
The i2CAT Foundation will develop and manage this laboratory in orbit, and will work to validate use cases such as the crop monitoring, water resources management, transport control and infrastructure management, among others. According to Figuerola, the mission will allow the foundation “to be in a leading position in the validation of technology and services oriented in 5G NB-IoT technologies.”

This third space mission starts from California (United States) with a rocket from the American company SpaceX. Sanpera has highlighted that this satellite is “the first” to be launched under the 5G standard and –textually– will allow standard cheap devices to be connected throughout the world. According to him, this will mean a “disruptive change” because in the world of satellite telecommunications it will be possible to start working with standard devices, something that until now was not possible.
Tost has advanced that there will be a fourth mission that will be tendered “throughout 2023” and that it will be aimed at observing the earth. Regarding the second nanosatellite that the Generalitat launched this January, the ‘Menut’, he has stated that they are obtaining results that “suggest that it will end up being a complete success”.
