The government is also feeling the labor shortage, Selor is changing its name | Economy

The federal government was looking for nearly 10,000 new employees last year, but fewer and fewer applicants are feeling attracted to a civil service job. This is evident from figures from Minister of Civil Service Petra De Sutter (Green). Selor changes its name to increase its attractiveness. From now on, the federal government’s selection office will be called ‘Werkenvoor.be’.

The federal government had 9,933 vacancies open last year, for which a total of 124,000 applications were submitted. This amounts to an average of 12 candidates per job, while there were 14 in 2021 and as many as 19 in 2017. The government is also suffering from the shortage on the labor market, De Sutter concludes from these figures.

To increase the attractiveness of the civil service profession, the name Selor must be changed. At that selection agency, applicants have to take the infamous tests to get started with the federal government. The name of the vehicle is known, but the function is not always. “‘Werkenvoor.be’ is clear in that respect,” says De Sutter. “It better reflects what a job in the federal government is all about than Selor does.”

There will also be a new campaign on the benefits and social relevance of a job with the federal government. “You come to work for the government because you want to help shape society. Federal government personnel have an impact on people with their work and expertise,” says De Sutter.

Last year, the federal government services mainly sought economists, lawyers, penitentiary officers and employees for call centers.
