The government has selected 14 new Region Deals for which 284.2 million euros is available. In the Region Deals, the national government and the regions work together to improve the quality of life, housing and work of residents and entrepreneurs, precisely in places that could really use an extra boost.

The 14 selected proposals come from all over the country and will be developed into full Region Deals in the coming period. This is done in consultation with all parties involved: governments, entrepreneurs, social organizations and knowledge institutions.

Hanke Bruins Slot (Interior and Kingdom Relations): ‘Last year I was able to see with my own eyes how many great initiatives have arisen in regions throughout the Netherlands as a result of the Region Deals. We do this by building on the drive, decisiveness and expertise of the people in the region themselves. Because regional challenges require regional solutions, which the national government and the region are working on together to do the right thing for our residents and entrepreneurs.’

How does a Region Deal work?

When concluding a Region Deal, the regions themselves come up with plans and ideas to tackle complex challenges. For example, to increase the quality of life in an area, to make training courses better suited to the labor market, or to make buildings and business parks more sustainable. The government will finance a maximum of half of the required investment. The government grant is a one-off and amounts to a minimum of 5 million and a maximum of 40 million euros.

In its selection, the government looks at four aspects: task (how large, urgent and complex); approach (how integrally is the task approached); finances (which parties co-invest, and how much); and organization (how are regional governments, residents and businesses involved). In doing so, the government also looked at a balanced distribution across the Netherlands and previously concluded Regional Deals. The assessment always focused on the question of whether the approach contributes to strengthening the broad prosperity of residents and entrepreneurs in the region in question.

In the fourth round, 23 proposals were submitted, of which 14 proposals will be further elaborated. A fifth and sixth round will follow later, expected in 2023 and 2024 respectively. Proposals that have not yet been eligible for a Region Deal can compete again in those rounds. This government has a total of 900 million euros available for the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds.
