The ‘Glassbak’ is now really down: still unknown what happens to the terrain

The last part of the former prison in Zwaag will be closed in the coming weeks and the site swept clean. And with that, the ‘Glassbak’ will disappear from the streets for good. “We are now breaking up and cleaning up the last rubble. Then we are ready,” explains Eric Zaal of VSM Sloopwerken.

Due to the rain, the terrain has been transformed into a mud pool. “It’s like a swimming pool here,” says Eric Zaal of VSM Demolition Works, laughing. He does the mega job. “If you’re not careful, you’ll be knee-deep in the ground.”

The downpours make it difficult to carry out the work. But, Zaal says: “We are on schedule. We are also dependent on the weather. It is impossible to do like yesterday and this morning.”

He expects to be ready between now and two weeks. “We are in the final phase,” says Zaal. The temporary fencing, which is supposed to close off the site from the outside world, is already in place. Several trucks are lined up in front of the fences to pick up the last remnants of rubble.

Completion?

The question now is what to do with the enormous amount of space that will be released when the time comes. The municipality of Hoorn indicates that they are still discussing the exact details of this.

Earlier there was talk about the arrival of housing or temporary tiny houses, but the municipality says that is not yet clear. “There is no concrete plan on the table yet,” explains a spokesperson.
